On Tinder, photos do 90% of the work. On Hinge, she also reads your prompts — and can like or comment on each one individually. A sharp prompt answer can get you a match from someone who wasn't sure about your photos. A generic one kills conversions that should have happened.
How Hinge is different from Tinder
Every photo and every prompt is a separate like opportunity.
On Tinder, she swipes right on your whole profile. On Hinge, she can like a specific photo or comment on a specific prompt answer to match. This means each element is its own conversion point. A great prompt answer can recover a match that weak photos would have lost. A generic answer on strong photos leaves matches on the table.
The comment mechanic makes specificity non-optional.
When she comments on your prompt to match, she already has an opening line ready — because you gave her one. If your answer is too vague or too generic, there's nothing to comment on. She'll scroll past even if she found the photo attractive. The most common reason Hinge underperforms is prompts that gave her no thread to pull.
Hinge distributes profiles more evenly than Tinder.
Tinder's algorithm is winner-takes-all — the top 1% of profiles capture 80% of the distribution. Hinge's model is closer to even distribution, which means a mid-tier Hinge profile gets shown to more women than a mid-tier Tinder profile. The payoff from fixing photos and prompts is real, but the urgency is lower than on Tinder where a weak profile gets practically no exposure.
The Hinge photo framework
Hinge allows 6 photos. Use 4–6. The same photo quality rules apply as Tinder, but Hinge profiles are scrolled more slowly — she's reading prompts alongside photos, which means each photo gets slightly more time. Variety matters more here than on Tinder.
Solo, direct eye contact, natural light, readable face. No sunglasses, no group shot. This is identical to Tinder — the first photo determines whether she keeps scrolling.
Social context. You with friends at a gathering, in a group, or at an event. Tells her you're easy to be around. A social photo here does more work than a second portrait.
Activity or interest shot. You hiking, cooking, at a gig, playing sport. Gives her something real to comment on. Generic third portrait photos add nothing.
Flexibility. Travel, another social context, a candid, something that shows range. The goal is: by photo 6, she knows what your life looks like.
The 3-prompt framework
You choose 3 prompts from Hinge's list. Each answer should do one thing: give her a specific, easy thread to respond to. Not a joke she can only react to with “lol” — a detail, opinion, or question that makes her want to say something back.
An opinion, observation, or specific preference that shows personality. Should invite agreement or friendly pushback. The goal is: she reads this and thinks 'I need to say something about this.'
"I love travelling and trying new food."
"Controversial take: [specific local restaurant] is overrated and I will die on this hill."
A window into your actual life — something specific you do, are into, or have recently started. Not vague ('I like outdoor activities') but specific enough that she can picture it and ask about it.
"Currently working on myself and building my fitness."
"Currently: trying to make the perfect [specific dish] and failing beautifully every Sunday."
A low-pressure signal about what you're looking for or what a good match would actually enjoy. Doesn't screen hard — just plants a flag that makes women who fit feel seen.
"Looking for someone who wants something real."
"We'll get along if: you have a strong opinion about at least one very niche thing."
The 4 Hinge mistakes that kill matches
All portrait photos, no context.
Three professional headshots and nothing else. She can tell you're attractive but has no idea who you are. By prompt 1 she's already moved on.
Generic prompt answers.
"I love to travel, gym, and spend time with friends." tells her nothing. She's seen this answer thousands of times and has nothing to say back.
Humour with no substance.
A joke with no real content gets a ‘lol’ reaction, not a match. Humour that also reveals a real opinion or specific detail works. Pure punchlines don't give her anywhere to go.
Prompts that screen too hard upfront.
"Looking for someone who wants marriage and kids in 2 years" in a prompt answer kills conversion from everyone who's interested but not sure yet. Save the serious signals for conversation.
